The Boys season 2: Karl Urban calls next season ‘diabolical’
By Monita Mohan
The Boys cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr and Jack Quaid were at Fan Expo Canada to give fans some enticing nuggets about season two.
At Fan Expo Canada, three cast members from Amazon’s immensely popular show, The Boys, were in attendance to tease fans about what to expect in season two. The session was as sweary as the show, but it’s evident the cast are having tremendous fun shooting and playing these characters.
Season one of The Boys ended with formerly naïve superhero fanboy Hughie Campbell on the run. Elsewhere, Billy Butcher finally confronted his nemesis Homelander, before learning a horrifying truth about his past.
Karl Urban, who plays avenging protagonist Butcher, referred to the sophomore season during The Boys panel event as “diabolical.” He wouldn’t reveal why but, considering how brutal season one was and given the images that have already surfaced from the second season shoot, we can only imagine what awaits viewers when The Boys returns.

If fans think Urban may have been exaggerating the show’s darker turn, his merciless teasing of co-star Jack Quaid will put people at ease. The stars had finished shooting a scene from episode three the day before attending Fan Expo Canada. Of the scene, the cast said:
"Urban: We shot this scene yesterday that will a) blow your minds, and b) traumatize the hell out of this guy (pointing to Quaid).Quaid: I’m still shaking a little bit."
Quaid’s Hughie apparently comes in for some punishment at the hands of Butcher, but why? Can we find some answers in the comics? Quaid appears to be shooting plenty of scenes where his character gets beaten up, because Antony Starr joked about him always looking beleaguered on set.

Urban also teased the possible arrival of Terror, Butcher’s dog from the comics. Perhaps the bulldog with a personality will show up in the next season. “Hang in there,” Urban urged the cheering crowd.
The cast waxed eloquent about showrunner Eric Kripke’s vision and how his old-school style of using practical effects and putting his cast in “dangerous situations” adds to the visceral feel of the show. From the sound of things, Urban may be underselling just how “diabolical” The Boys is about to become.
The cast was also excited about the introduction of Stormfront. Written as a male character in the comics, Aya Cash (You’re The Worst) steps into the gender-bent role of a neo-Nazi for the show. As per Urban, Stormfront is “going to blow your mind” because if Homelander is terrifying, Stormfront’s actions are somehow even worse. Starr called her a “badass broad” who is a match for Homelander.
Suffice to say, audiences are definitely not prepared for the horrors of The Boys season two. The show is currently filming in Toronto and is set to air in summer 2020.
