The teaser trailer for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will only be shown in theaters before IT: Chapter Two.

Moviegoers will undoubtedly be flocking to theaters this weekend to see the much-anticipated sequel to 2017’s It.

However, a report from Variety confirms that viewers will also be treated to a teaser trailer for the upcoming DCEU film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

While this had a number of fans hoping that the clip would receive a wide release, this teaser trailer will be exclusive to theaters only and will not be released online.

Variety describes the teaser:

"However, a trailer did leak online, allowing sneaky fans to get a teaser of the highly anticipated “Suicide Squad” spinoff without leaving their home. In the leaked clip, red balloons slowly travel up the screen to eerie music before Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn dramatically slashes them with a sledgehammer. “I’m so f—ing over clowns,” she says with a smirk."

On one hand, the choice to make the teaser trailer for Birds of Prey exclusive to theaters is an odd one. Movies fans nowadays are used to seeing a trailer online. In fact, the Avengers: Endgame trailer recently broke the record for the most-watched trailer of all time. The buzz a movie can generate just based on the trailer can have an impact on its overall success.

On the other hand, there is a nostalgic charm to this decision by Warner Bros. Before online trailers blew up to become the phenomenon they are now, the joy in going to the theaters didn’t just center on watching the movie, it also had a lot to do with seeing the trailers before it.

More from DCEU

The most famous case of movie fans going to the theater solely for a trailer was Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It was the first Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi and many fans wanted to see as much of it as possible. As a result, the movies that were lucky enough to be showing the trailer saw a jump in the box office department.

Perhaps this is the desired effect Warner Bros. is looking for. It surprisingly broke the box office record for highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. However, the summer box office was down compared to other years.

This could be an attempt by Warner Bros. to get a few more people to see It: Chapter Two to boost the movie’s box office numbers just slightly. Whether or not this has to do with the rumors that Warner Bros. did not like the test screenings of Birds of Prey is unknown, but it may play a factor in their decision.
