The Russo brothers have teased a potential return to the MCU, and they already know which property they’d like to direct.

It’s safe to say that Joe and Anthony Russo made their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The directing dynamic duo first made their presence felt with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, before returning two years later for the Star-Spangled Man’s third installment, Civil War.

However, they would take things to a whole new level when they directed the MCU’s two-part finale, kicking things off with 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and following it up with this year’s record breaking Avengers: Endgame.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

They have since moved onto their next projects, 21 Bridges and Dhaka – and understandably so. After all, directing the highest-grossing film of all time (Endgame) sure is a nice way to end your tenure with the MCU.

However, that might not be the last time we see the two directors set foot inside Marvel’s shared universe of superheroes.

At Toronto International Film Festival, the pair were interviewed by SYFY Wire, where they revealed that they loved telling the overarching MCU narrative across multiple films and, thus, would be eager to direct another Marvel production – alluding to two new, but major, Marvel Studios acquisitions.

"“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run. Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, the Thing. And Fantastic Four is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot… Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going really big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”"

Both the X-Men and Fantastic Four film franchises were previously owned by Fox but, following the Disney/Fox merger, Marvel once again has the rights to them – meaning that reboots of both properties are inevitable.

With that in mind, it’s safe to say that these larger, multi-protagonist reboots would need directors who are accustomed to working with major casts and pulling off long-awaited events. On that criteria alone, it’s clear that the Russo brothers would be the right fit for the job.
