Nick Fury references Spider-Man and the X-Men in deleted ‘Iron Man’ scene
By Erik Swann
Nick Fury originally referenced some major Marvel characters during the Iron Man post-credits scene.
Most comic book fans remember Samuel L. Jackson’s post-credits debut as Nick Fury in 2008’s Iron Man. In the now-famous scene, Fury breaks into Tony Stark’s home to discuss the Avenger Initiative with him. But it turns out the scene could have played out in a different way and featured references to some of Marvel’s biggest characters.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was honored at the 45th annual Saturn Awards last night. While the film producer was unable to attend, he did send a pre-taped video, during which he teased the upcoming Infinity Saga box set. The collection is set to include plenty of extras and special features, including deleted scenes. And Feige revealed (via Marvel News) a particular scene featuring Nick Fury’s debut in Iron Man.
What’s most interesting about this version is that Fury not only reveals the Avenger Initiative, but he also explicitly references “radioactive bug bites” and “mutants”. These are, of course, references to Spider-Man and the X-Men, predating their ability to actually be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The scene, while exciting, does come as a bit of a surprise. As mentioned, Feige and company didn’t have access to Marvel’s Mutants or the Web-Slinger at the time. Which means this version was probably shot with wishful thinking. Still, Marvel Studios did ultimately get their wish on both accounts. With Disney’s acquisition of Fox, they now have access to the X-Men and already have plans for them. And of course, Spider-Man was brought into the MCU in 2016, before Sony recently took back the character when the two studios failed to reach terms on a new deal.
With a scene like this, it’s exciting to think of what else Marvel Studios plans to add to The Infinity Saga box set.
