A new murder mystery, Incoming, is set to bring the heroes of the Marvel Universe together.

Ever since the start of the month, Marvel has teased fans with an upcoming a story called Incoming – one that is set to begin on December 26th, 2019. Well now, as Comic Book Resources reported, the premise (as well as the massive creative team) for Incoming, has been revealed.

Billed as a crossover event meant to drive Marvel’s line of comics for the year – as they always are – Incoming is set to involve nearly all of the major players in the Marvel Universe and will close out the year and run into 2020!

Teasers seem to imply that the triggering event is a murder investigation conducted by the Fantastic Four and the Avengers (or at least Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Valkyrie). Another teaser notes the involvement of Jessica Jones, Daredevil (in his black “Born Again” costume) and the new Masked Raider. A third reveals involvement from Jonathan Hickman’s House of X run, which has seen collaboration between a resurrected Professor X, Magneto, and Apocalypse for the benefit of mutantkind.

Moreover, the Champions, whose ongoing series was just canceled, are revealed to be reacting to some sort of political event, which implies a relaunch. And finally, some sort of cosmic threat will be challenging the Avengers. Doesn’t that happen every week?

Incoming No. 1 will apparently be an extra-sized issue featuring the writing talents of virtually every writer with an ongoing series within the company. They include Al Ewing, Dan Slott, Kelly Thompson, Greg Pak, Eve L. Ewing, Jason Aaron, Tini Howard, Saladin Ahmed, Donny Cates, Matt Rosenberg, Chip Zdarsky, Jonathan Hickman, and Ed Brisson.

The art will be by Humberto Ramos, Jim Cheung, “and more!” It confirms that the kickoff will feature a murder mystery and involve nearly the entire Marvel Universe.

It’s likely that each writer will write a few pages reflecting around their particular comics/characters. Thompson, for example, writes Captain Marvel, who is set to be undergoing a “dark” turn around this time. Al Ewing writes the top 10 best-selling Immortal Hulk as well as Jane Foster: Valkyrie. Donny Cates writes Venom, Dan Slott writes Tony Stark: Iron Man, and so on.

If the concept of a murder mystery propelling an entire universe seemes familiar to you, it should. From 2004-2005, DC Comics released Identity Crisis, which had a similar plot. The series sold gangbusters across at least two printings. At the time, Marvel attempted a coincidentally-scheduled mini series, Identity Disc, which failed to move the needle. This time it looks like a more genuine attempt to replicate it, while also using the story as a commercial to push new and current series. Will it be a story, or a five dollar catalog? Stay tuned!
