Ranking the 15 greatest DC Comics rivalries of all-time
12. Shazam and Black Adam
Technically the rivalry between Shazam and Black Adam is the longest in history. They have a history which dates back to ancient Egypt. Don’t mistake this rivalry as good versus evil. In fact, One can argue, Black Adam isn’t evil or a villain at all. The rivalry between Shazam and Black Adam stems from philosophical differences.
Black Adam considers himself the champion of the people; one who fights for the oppressed. He has a different, more violent way of dealing with the oppressors. Some fans may not know that Adam was the original champion of Shazam.
However, when Adam spoke the words Shazam, the powers bestowed upon him were of the Egyptian gods. This was the fault of Shazam’s sister, Blaze who deserves a ton of blame for this rivalry.
The real issue wasn’t the power, though it played a role. The problem was, Shazam didn’t like Black Adam’s violent nature toward bad guys thus a rivalry was born. Upset, fearing Adam’s vengeful nature, Shazam trapped Adam along with his powers in an amulet. Centuries would pass before Shazam selected a new champion in Billy Batson.
Batson didn’t become Shazam until after the murder of his parents. Their death was a result of greed and betrayal of a man who’d awaken Black Adam. After years laying latent Black Adam was reborn giving birth to their rivalry once more.
Their battles aren’t like some of the others. Black Adam’s hatred for Shazam stems from their ancient history. Thus, anyone who calls themselves Shazam will taste the wrath of Black Adam. Thankfully, the DCEU will gift us with their rivalry on the big-screen after Black Adam’s solo movie.
