Sandman creator Neil Gaiman assures fans that Netflix’s Sandman series will follow the comic’s plot.

Renowned writer Neil Gaiman replied on a Reddit AMA that Netflix’s upcoming The Sandman series will be adapting “most if not all” of the stories from his iconic The Sandman run with DC and Vertigo. This is the latest update since the announcement of the series back in June.

The series is set for 11 episodes with Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey’s Anatomy) slated to write and serve as showrunner. Gaiman and David S. Goyer will be executive producers for the series.

Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg were the creative forces behind The Sandman starting in 1989, spanning 75 issues that ended in 1996. The series was the flagship for Vertigo after DC Comics placed the series under that banner in 1993.

The series follows Dream, an anthropomorphic personification of dreams, who rules over the world of dreams. Many storylines take place in the Dreaming and incorporate many gothic and fantasy elements within the story along with many other compelling themes that earned the series high critical acclaim.

Fans of The Sandman will have their fears alleviated knowing that the original series will be shown in its near entirety. However, the big question now revolves around who will star as the titular character.

Back in 2013, Joesph Gordon-Levitt was set to direct and star in the series, but he dropped out of the project in 2016. The Sandman would offer a lot of potential character themes for an actor to take on with the story incorporating many thematic elements from classic and modern mythology creating a tragic hero arc for the protagonist.

Marvel’s relationship with Netflix is seemingly over with Disney Plus coming in and debuting many new TV shows featuring Marvel characters. The Sandman would give Netflix an opportunity to get itself back into the superhero genre by adapting more characters from Vertigo Comics. Netflix has not announced a premiere date for The Sandman yet.
