Marvel’s Ghost Rider series no longer going ahead at Hulu
Hulu has decided not to move forward with Marvel’s Ghost Rider. The live-action series was set to premiere on the streaming service with Gabriel Luna starring as the lead character.
Robbie Reyes will be looking for a new home as Deadline is reporting that Hulu has chosen not to proceed with Marvel’s Ghost Rider.
The iconic Marvel Comics character was set to have his own live-action series with Gabriel Luna reprising his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. role as the character. The prject was announced back in May as Hulu had picked up two new live-action series from Marvel Television, Ghost Rider and Helmstrom, to premiere in 2020.
Marvel’s Helstrom is still on track for a 2020 release on Hulu. As for Ghost Rider, Deadline reports that Hulu and the team reached a creative impasse that could not be resolved, resulting in Hulu dropping plans for the series on its service.
Deadline lays out the close relationship that Marvel Television and Hulu share:
"Marvel Television remains a leading supplier to Hulu with a series slate that includes the live-action Marvel’s Runaways, which has been renewed for a third season, and the upcoming Marvel’s Helstrom — both co-produced by ABC Signature — as well as a suite of four connected animated series, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K, Marvel’s Hit-Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show and Marvel’s Howard The Duck, set to roll out in 2020, culminating in a special event, Marvel’s The Offenders."
Stephen Lightfoot was the executive producer on Ghost Rider and was set to serve as the series’ showrunner. Deadline also reports that there is no clear indication on whether the series will be shopped to another streaming service. Marvel does have Cloak & Dagger on Freeform, so that may be an option for Jeph Loeb and company.
Luna debuted as Ghost Rider on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2016 and quickly became a fan-favorite. That is what makes this news disappointing for many fans.
Loeb and Marvel Television do not have a lot of options since the MCU rarely acknowledges the Marvel Television universe. It may be possible that Robbie Reyes / Ghost Rider could be introduced in main MCU continuity through a Disney Plus series (which Kevin Feige has confirmed that all Marvel Disney Plus shows are connected and tie into the movies).

The current comics continuity has the Avengers going up against the Ghost Riders. The story, written by Jason Aaron and Clay Chapman, features Robbie Reyes, Johnny Blaze and even Cosmic Ghost Rider. Where the story will go is unknown but with it still ongoing, it may be possible that Feige and his team have found inspiration to include Ghost Rider into the main MCU.
Marvel is set to welcome in Blade so it’s possible that Blade and Ghost Rider could be used as potential avenues to introduce darker characters into the MCU.
The future plans for Robbie Reyes / Ghost Rider is up in the air at this point. Fans can only hope that Luna’s Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. appearance will not be his last.
