Roller derby Harley Quinn will be featured in Birds of Prey

A new video included a clip from the set of Birds of Prey, which shows Harley Quinn in a familiar costume.

WarnerMedia recently released a video discussing their diversity and inclusion report, which included a clip of Margot Robbie, in costume, and director Cathy Yan on the set of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Interestingly, Margot Robbie’s costume is Harley Quinn’s roller derby outfit, so what could this mean?

Robbie has previously explained how this film is less male gaze-y. Many people have less than desirable things to say about her costume in Suicide Squad. Adding to this were the usual orthodox comic-book nerds who need 100% accuracy, including costumes. Not many people welcome the Harley Quinn costume we see in the teaser.

Look hard enough, though, and you can find some fangirls already cosplaying it across social media. Roller derby Harley Quinn can fulfill both of these problems. One, roller derby Harley dates back to her original series from the New 52 in Harley Quinn No. 1Second, the outfit is not as revealing and sexualized as her costume in Suicide Squad.

Roller derby Harley shows that Cathy Yan is looking to pull material from the comics, as well. If we take what we know about the film so far, such as her split with the Joker and what happens in the comics, we can guess, theorize and have fun dreaming of what else there will be. If Harley Quinn isn’t with the Joker and he throws her out, then she must have her own place now. Does this mean she is also the landlord like in the comics? Will this include the supporting cast of characters from that series, as well.? She obviously has to pay for herself now, hence the roller derby gig. Will we get Bernie, her stuffed beaver?

With all of this, we can probably find this film as more of an origin for Harley Quinn and not Suicide Squad. That film was simply the footnote version of her origin. She is only really identified by and in her connection with the Joker. Birds of Prey can help set up Harley as her own character and woman when it hits theaters on February 7, 2020.
