Rey and Kylo Ren have had a rocky relationship thus far, and it’s only going to get more complicated in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Star Wars franchise has always featured an ensemble cast, and the same can be said of the sequel trilogy. However, Rey and Kylo Ren have emerged as the two key characters of this particular set of films. Their relationship has shifted in different ways, as they’ve gone from fighting each other to fight side by side. It was still uncertain after The Last Jedi, and that’s going to continue in The Rise of Skywalker.

As part of Empire Magazine’s upcoming exclusive story (via Comicbook.com) on The Rise of Skywalker, co-writer Chris Terrio teased what’s in store for the characters. Terrio specifically touched on the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren, which he says will still be complicated. He and co-writer and director J.J. Abrams opted to go this route after Rian Johnson’s handling of them in Episode VIII:

"“Some of the most interesting scenes in The Last Jedi are the conversations between Rey and Ren. We’ve tried to pick up that complicated relationship that really has been present ever since the interrogation in Episode VII. When Ren takes off his mask, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else. Rian [Johnson] developed that in fascinating ways and we’ve been able to develop it even further.”"

Rian Johnson altered the dynamics between the powerful, Force-users for The Last Jedi, shifting their hostile link to a more empathetic one. The two even joined forces to take down Supreme Leader Snoke’s Elite Praetorian Guard, which culminated in Ren (Ben Solo) asking Rey to join him in building a new order. But Rey rejected the offer, effectively causing them to remain enemies.

Fans have long speculated how things will pan out for Rey and Kylo Ren by the end of the trilogy. Some believe Ren will be redeemed and, ultimately, assist Rey in defeating Emporer Palpatine. Others believe they’ll fight until only one of them is left standing.

There are an infinite amount of possibilities for how their stories will be concluded and, right now, we can only guess as to what Terrio and Abrams have cooked up. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives in theaters on December 20, 2019.
