During a recent interview, actor Robert Pattinson revealed that he’s unsure as to how he actually secured the role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film.

It’s one of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood, and Robert Pattinson is the latest in a long line-up of actors to secure it. That role is, of course, none other than the Dark Knight himself: Batman.

Pattinson won out over Nicholas Hoult after the two reportedly had the-powers-that-be at Warner Bros. struggling to choose between them. However, in spite of his tenure as a well-respected actor, there was criticism over the choice from certain fans who couldn’t see past his years as vampire Edward Cullen in YA film franchise Twilight (which is, of course, a ridiculous reason to criticise an actor).

However, it appears that Pattinson himself was quite shocked to hear he landed the role. Esquire UK conducted a recent interview with him (and his The Lighthouse co-star Willem Dafoe) and he revealed that he was genuinely in disbelief that he won the role.

"“It’s kind of insane… I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”"

Pattinson clearly doesn’t give himself enough credit. Not only is he a commercially successful star that will undoubtedly draw audiences (including potential new fans) to the movie theater, he’s also capable of delivering stunning leading performances – something we’ve seen him do in countless films such as Life and Good Times.

He follows in the footsteps of Lewis Wilson, Robert Lowery, Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck and David Mazaouz in bringing the legendary Caped Crusader to life in live-action.

Given his incredible performances and knack for playing broody nocturnal creatures, it’s pretty safe to say that he’ll have no problem proving any naysayers wrong and etching his name in history as one of the best Dark Knight to grace our screens.

He may not believe it, but he is, without a doubt, Batman.
