Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler will produce a comic book series adaptation of Bitter Root, alongside Zinzi Evans and Sev Ohanian.

Deadline is reporting that Legendary has made a deal with Black Panther and Creed director Ryan Coogler to produce the adaptation of Image Comics property Bitter Root.

Coogler will work with Zinzi Evans and Sev Ohanian as they will lead the development of an adaptation of the series created by David F. Walker & Sanford Greene and indie veteran Chuck Brown.

Deadline has a synopsis of Bitter Root:

"Set during the vibrant Harlem Renaissance of 1924, Bitter Root focuses on a fractured family of once-great monster hunters who must face an unimaginable evil that descends upon New York City. For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off the prejudice of the era, transforming human beings into hideous monsters. But their heyday has faded and with most of the family dead, and the surviving Sangeryes at odds between saving or killing these creatures, the remaining Sangeryes must overcome the wounds of the past in the hopes of thwarting the invasion."

It has not been confirmed if Coogler will end up directing this adaptation, but Legendary did get rights to Bitter Root back in March so a director could be announced very soon. Coogler is a producer on Space Jam 2 so he could always choose that movie’s director, Malcolm D. Lee, to direct this screen adaptation.

This kind of story does fit in Coogler’s wheelhouse. From his feature debut, Fruitvale Station, Coolger has been a champion of representing the African-American community on-screen.

His previous comic book-inspired film, MCU film Black Panther, not only made box office history, it was widely praised for its diversity and its effort to showcase stories that are not often shown in big blockbuster movies and it even earned an Academy Award nomination.

Bitter Root offers Coogler the same opportunity but on a smaller scale. Bitter Root just finished its run this year and will most likely have a smaller budget, but Coogler is a director that has proven himself as one of the best in Hollywood.
