Joker debuts to over $90 million during its opening weekend
Joker is already making a dent in the box office with a massive opening weekend.
Joker has had a tremendous opening weekend. It’s already beating the estimates and making a profit. Add in its international opening, and it’s making serious bank.
Estimates originally had the film opening at $85 million but, instead, the film opened with $93.5 million, roughly 8% more than its estimate. Thursday numbers for the film had it making $13.3 million, which is more than last fall’s Venom. The first installment in Sony’s SUMC did $10 million in Thursday screenings.
In addition to Thursday screenings, Joker beat Venom‘s opening of $80.25 million. In addition, it now holds the number one opening for a film in the month of October. It: Chapter Two is now the third-best fall opening weekend film, thanks to Joker by roughly 2 million. As far as R-rated releases go, it is the fourth-best opening weekend for an R-rated film.

Batman is now envious of this new DC Comics movie. Batman ’89 through Batman Begins all lose out to Joker‘s opening weekend. This also includes The LEGO Batman Movie. Even when you adjust all of those films for inflation, they still lose out. Who knew the Joker could outgross Batman? Popular DCEU titles like Aquaman and Shazam also have smaller opening weekends to compared to Joaquin Phoenix’s flick. In fact, this is the 8th best opening weekend DC Comics film.
Overseas, the film is already collecting a good chunk of cash. Internationally, it opened to $140.5 million, with estimates showing that its biggest markets include South Korea, United Kingdom, Russia and Mexico. Joker is also the third-best foreign opening DC Comics film, losing to Justice League and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. This means it is topping all DCEU film installments and The Dark Knight Trilogy. One reason for this comes from the fact that the Todd Phillips-directed feature isn’t causing any controversy overseas.
In its entirety, Joker opened to $234 million worldwide, all of this made on a $55 million production budget. And it’s doubtful the marketing budget is any more than this. Hence the film is already doing four times its budget. On top of this, it’s making a profit in each market on its own. With all of this early success, there could definitely be talks of a sequel sometime soon.
