Marvel, Disney, Fox, Apple, Amazon and more are being sued for a copyright violation pertaining to the theme song of the 1990s show X-Men: The Animated Series.

TMZ is reporting that a man named Zoltan Krisko is suing many big media companies like Marvel, Disney, FOX, Apple, and Amazon, claiming that the TV executives behind the 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series show ripped off the show’s iconic theme song from a Hungarian TV show, Linda.

Comic Book Resources identifies Kirsko as the manager of the estate of late Hungarian composer Gyorgy Vukan. Vukan was the man who composed the music for Linda, a Hungarian police comedy-thriller that aired from 1984-1991.

There are similarities between the X-Men: The Animated Series theme song and the Linda opening song. However, the similarities are vague enough to call them different and original tracks.

What may influence this case is the recent Katy Perry copyright case. Perry was found guilty of copying a 2009 Christian rap song called “Joyful Noise” while making her hit song “Dark Horse.”

Vox points out that while the songs are similar, Perry and her team made enough changes to make the song different. The jury, in this case, did not think so, and Vox implies that this case may be a bad precedent for the music industry.

Perry and her team were forced to pay $2.8 million in damages. These big media companies can easily pay a fine like this, but the details of the case are unknown at this time.

Krisko claims to have only come across X-Men: The Animated Series in 2017. He also claims that the success of the series is because of the use of the theme song that was stolen.

It may be hard to believe that Krisko had not heard of X-Men: The Animated Series until just two years ago, but he does have a claim to how iconic the theme song is. If fans were to rank the most memorable element from X-Men: The Animated Series, the theme song would have to be in the top three.

What becomes of this case will have to be a wait and see. At best, Marvel and Disney pay a big fine and insert Vukan and Linda in the credits. At worst, Disney and Marvel may be forced to re-dub the theme song when the series becomes available to stream on Disney Plus.
