NYCC 2019: Marvel relaunching Iron Man and Guardians of the Galaxy titles in 2020

Marvel Comics is planning to relaunch both its Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy titles.

A lot has changed in the last decade. Gone are the days of Joe Quesada as Marvel’s editor and Bill Jemas and their run past the new millennium. By the 2010s, when there had been a decline in sales of the direct-market and a fluctuation of the digital-publishing scene, many initiatives were formed by Marvel Entertainment.

In the last three years following the All-New, All-Different Marvel initiative, the company has struggled to connect with audiences, while some flocked to DC, coinciding with the shift from The New 52 to DC Rebirth. But in 2020, there is set to be a change, with Marvel announcing at New York City Comic Con (via The Hollywood Reporter) as Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy titles will be re-launched following Marvel’s Fresh Start line.

Iron-Man 2020 will be the new title of the Armored Avenger’s adventure, with co-writers Dan Slott and Christos Cage and artist Pete Woods on the project. The new series will see the writers continue their run on Anthony “Tony” Stark from the Tony Stark: Iron Man series. The upcoming series also has Arno Stark, Tony’s adoptive brother is under the helmet.

More from Comics

While Iron-Man 2020 is something more distinct and follows a new angle, the creative team seems to be taking longtime readers back to 1984, with a different version of Arno Stark being Tony’s cousin as opposed to being his brother and hailing from an alternate future.

The God of Thunder is also making a return, as Donny Cates, writer of the popular Venom series, will unite with Deadpool illustrator Nic Klein for a new series. Cates is one of the best writers to come out of Marvel this year. Since he has taken what Jason Aaron did with the Thor mythos and upped his arc by adding the symbiotes and their God, Knull, Cates would be a great fit for Thor and Asgard. The series itself will simply be titled Thor.

With Cates being a worthy replacement for Aaron, it means he will no longer serve in his post on the Guardians of the Galaxy title. Instead, Al Ewing, writer of Immortal Hulk fame, will fill Cates’ position. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man artist, Juann Cabal, will also contribute his artistry to the next volume of GOTG issues in 2020.
