Wayne Brady will be joining the Black Lightning cast in season 3.

Actor and comedian Wayne Brady will be joining the cast of The CW’s Black Lightning in season 3.

Newton will portray the character of Tyson Spikes, better known as Gravedigger, and his episodes will start airing in early 2020.

This news was originally reported by TVLine.

According to TVLine’s description, Spikes was a World War II soldier who acquired enhanced strength, agility, tactical abilities and hand-to-hand combat expertise. When the war ended, he defected to the country of Markovia rather than return to the segregation of the period.

Spikes aims to create a sovereign land for metahumans within Markovia (much like Reeva Payge from The Gifted). He will be opposed by the ASA and the Pierce clan.

Spikes was actually the second character to use the title Gravedigger, and he was introduced fairly recently in June 2008.

More from Arrowverse

It seems like the show will combine the character of Spikes, who in the comics has telepathic abilities, with the origins of the first Gravedigger, Ulysses Hazard.

Brady is best known for his work on the improv series Whose Line is It Anyway? (1998-2006, 2013-present), but has also had a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother as Barney Stinson’s brother James, and has appeared in stage productions of Chicago, Hamilton and Rent.

Despite airing on The CW, Black Lightning has never officially been included as part of the Arrowverse, though this will be officially cemented and remedied during the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

The show follows high school principal Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning (Cress Williams) and his daughters Anissa/Thunder and Jennifer/Lightning (China Anne McClain) as they protect their city of Freeland, Georgia from evildoers, specifically the ageless albino politician Tobias Whale.
