Jared Leto was not very happy to see another Joker compete with his version of the character from Suicide Squad.

The New York Times recently published a piece detailing the behind the scenes story of their box office hit, Joker. The NY Times called Joker a calculated risk considering the content of the movie and the potential messages some audiences may get from the movie.

One detail that stands out is that amidst the explanations of the violence of the movie, Warner Bros. executives had to deal with an unhappy Jared Leto. Leto played the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and Leto reportedly does not like the idea of a Joker that is in competition with his.

There were not many details on how Leto expressed his displeasure, nor was there any explanation as to what Warner Bros. told Leto.

Leto is not slated to return for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and he does not appear to be set to appear with Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey. So it remains unclear as to whether or not Leto will be making a return to the DCEU.

More from DCEU

It is nice to hear Leto does still has a passion for the DCEU and has not left his performance as the Joker behind. However, his portrayal of the iconic villain was not welcomed by all fans. From his look to his acting choices, there was not a lot for fans to embrace, and there is not a strong rallying cry to see him return as the character.

The drama behind the scenes, alongside the release of Joker, highlights the lack of a clear direction for the DCEU. It is highly unlikely that fans will see Joaquin Phoenix in The Batman. Leto’s displeasure of another Joker could be due to a lack of communication with Warner Bros.
