Netflix could possibly hold another Masters of the Universe property, as Sony considers selling them the rights to the live-action He-Man reboot.

Netflix, the streaming giant of today, may become the home of not one, but a trio of properties set within the Masters of the Universe landscape. At the time this editorial has been published, three seasons of She-Ra and the Princess of Power animated series has aired, with a fourth season due for release on November 5. Also, Kevin Smith’s upcoming anime, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, was announced at Power-Con back in August.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is considering sending the live-action reboot, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which has been in development for years, to Netflix as opposed to giving it a theatrical release.

Chairman of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Tom Rothman, has most likely considered this as an option. Sony has been on the hunt for viable franchises ever since the Marc Webb reboot of Spider-Man and the release of Skyfall. With James Bond no longer in Sony’s grasp, the Ghostbusters on the mend and Men in Black: International bombing at the box office, the company is in dire need of a franchise jolt to keep them above water.

This apparently comes as no surprise. On the lookout for the latest franchise and setting up the building blocks for another shared cinematic universe, Sony sold Harbinger to Paramount last month (as reported by THR). Harbinger, a film adaptation from Valiant Entertainment featuring a group of super-powered teens, was in development as far back as 2015. So was Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot, set for release on February 21, 2020.

Selling Masters of the Universe would be Sony’s latest example of reducing the risk of losses upon release in theaters by selling to another streamer or distributor. Filming was initially supposed to begin in July but was halted to rework certain production elements including costumes, designs and training for the cast. David S. Goyer will remain as executive producer, while Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penned the screenplay The Nee Brothers are slated to direct. By the power of Grayskull, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is set to hit our screens on March 5, 2021.
