Marvel is unsure if Thor’s weight gain will remain in ‘Love and Thunder’

Marvel Studios and Taika Waititi are still deciding if Thor will still have his belly when he appears in Love and Thunder.

One of the biggest surprises from Avengers: Endgame was the reveal of Thor’s weight gain during the five-year gap. While surprising, this new iteration of the character, dubbed “Fat Thor” or “Bro Thor,” proved to be a hit with audiences. However, the God of Thunder’s new look still isn’t a lock for Thor: Love and Thunder.

Speaking withYahoo!, Love and Thunder’s writer and director, Taika Waititi, revealed that he and Marvel Studios are still discussing the status of Thor’s weight in the film. This stems from the fact that they’ve yet to determine how far removed the movie is from Endgame:

"“This is an ongoing debate that we’re still having at Marvel. Cause we’re trying to figure out how long — how many months or years — this is after Endgame, at what point does this take place?”"

Despite this, Waititi is keeping his options open, as he loves the idea of the Odinson’s look changing as he progresses:

"“I think we always want to keep changing it up with Thor. He’s so interesting when he’s changing all the time.”"

By the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Thor had a renewed sense of hope and seemed eager to carve out a new path for himself. He also appeared to be comfortable with his new look, despite criticism from characters like Rocket Raccoon.

The decision on the God of Thunder’s weight could easily go either way. On one hand, his new sense of purpose may have motivated him to regain the chiseled physique fans came to know him for. But on the other hand, he may also prefer to keep his new body weight since he seems to like it.

Whatever the case, the character’s weight won’t have a significant impact on the story itself. As audiences saw in Endgame, he was perfectly capable of taking down enemies at his new size. And if he does slim down, Waititi is sure to add some humorous (and respectful) callbacks to the hero’s formerly plump size. Thor: Love and Thunder flies into theaters on November 5, 2021.
