Paul Dano is in talks to join The Batman as the Riddler

Matt Reeves’ The Batman looks to add another villain to its cast in the form of the Riddler.
As reported by Variety, Paul Dano is being eyed and in talks to take on the role of the Riddler in The Batman. If true, Dano looks to be joining the already star-studded cast of The Batman, which features Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, and Jeffrey Wright. Interestingly, THR also adds that Dano’s version of the character will have the civilian name “Edward Nashton” as opposed to the character’s original name, “Edward Nygma.” Dano is most notable for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood, Swiss Army Man, and Prisoners.
Original reports claimed that Jonah Hill was being eyed to play either the Riddler or the Penguin. But this news comes a day after it was reported that talks with Jonah Hill had broken down, so it seems Hill was being eyed more for the role of the Penguin. As of now though, there is no information regarding how big the role will be and whether or not the Riddler will be the main villain in the film.

After the setback of talks breaking down with Hill, it’s good that this news is already being revealed. After the many problems that this film’s development has had, this feels like a confident move by Warner Bros. Even though they didn’t comment on the report, the fact that it’s even being reported speaks volumes to how much they want to control the narrative in a positive way at this point.
The Riddler has previously appeared on film in Batman Forever, where he was portrayed by Jim Carrey. The character also appeared in a main role in the series Gotham and was also the perpetrator of some of the most involved side quests in the Batman: Arkham video game series. Hopefully, if Dano is playing the Riddler, the characterization will be closer to the darker incarnations rather than Carrey’s.
