Rumor: Ant-Man 3 in active development, expected to film summer 2021

A third film in the Ant-Man series is reportedly in active development with production set to begin filming in the summer of 2021.

Murphy’s Law Podcast is reporting that Marvel Studios has decided to proceed with the development of a third Ant-Man movie. Filming for the movie is expected to begin in the summer of 2021, placing the movie in line for Marvel’s Phase Five possibly alongside Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Blade.

From a financial point of view, the green lighting of a third movie in the Ant-Man series is a no-brainer. Ant-Man and the Wasp made over $622 million worldwide, over $100 million more than Ant-Man.

What will be interesting to see is what the third Ant-Man movie will explore with Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne. The end of Ant-Man and the Wasp set up a lot of storylines to explore for an Ant-Man 3.

Bill Foster and Ava Starr/Ghost are on the run, but Janet van Dyne has convinced Scott and company to help Ava remain stable outside of the Quantum Realm. Will there be any follow-up to these characters with them joining Scott and Hope against the movie’s villain?

The movie could also explore the personal relationships between Hank Pym and Janet. Janet has spent a lot of time in the Quantum Realm and life in the outside world may provide some personal story beats to explore.

There’s also the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame. to consider. Scott was stuck in the Quantum Realm for five years, and Endgame gave him a brief reunion with his now older daughter, Cassie.

The Ant-Man movies have always gone back to Scott’s relationship with Cassie with Scott always trying to be a good father to her. How will their relationship change with Scott missing a large part of Cassie’s development into a teenager? And could Cassie even step into the superhero realm herself?

How will Scott change after fighting a life and death battle against Thanos and his army? There’s a lot to explore with Ant-Man 3, and it does not seem likely he will make a significant appearance in an MCU movie. So there may not be any outside factors that could affect Scott Lang’s third solo outing.
