An Infinity Stone just reappeared in this week’s Captain Marvel
By Alex Widen
One of the Infinity Stones that can be used to manipulate existence itself has popped back up in this week’s latest issue of Captain Marvel! SPOILER ALERT!
In 2018’s crossover Infinity Wars (which followed Infinity Countdown and was a sequel of sorts of Infinity Gauntlet of 1991), the heroes of the Marvel Universe had once again sought to save half the lives in the universe. This time it wasn’t Thanos but a being named Requiem. It ended with Adam Warlock casting the Infinity Stones off to the far corners of reality to find hosts after granting sentience onto them. That means they’re alive now.
One of them, the Reality Stone, pops up at the end of Captain Marvel No. 11. It marked the conclusion of the “Falling Star” arc by Kelly Thompson and Carmen Carnero (who leaves the book after this issue for X-CORPS). At the end of the story, Carol Danvers manages to defeat the secretive new heroine named Star, who proves to be a deranged journalist who sought to absorb the power of Carol as well as all the people in Manhattan in order to avoid being “weak.” On the last page, Star (also known as Ripley Ryan) awakens in her cell at the Raft to find the Reality Stone inside her chest.

Quite why the Infinity gem chose Ryan is unknown, nor was it mentioned in any way during the issue. However, Marvel has already announced that Thompson would pick up with Star where this issue left off with her own five-issue miniseries in January 2020. In June’s Wolverine & The Infinity Watch No. 5, the Time Stone bound itself to Hector Bautista, a Texan man falsely convicted of murder. After being chased around by Darkhawk, Loki, and Wolverine, Bautista has now dubbed himself “Overtime,” clad himself in a knockoff Green Lantern costume, and departed on his own.
In Ripley Ryan, this marks the second of the Infinity Stones to bond itself to an Earth convict. The only difference is Ryan is guilty as sin, and her sanity may even be questionable. Captain Marvel herself is slated to go “dark” next month, and what if any impact Ryan and her Reality Gem have in regards to causing this is unknown. It looks like the only way to get more answers is to read the comics when they hit the shelves.
