Taika Waititi is aiming for Thor: Love and Thunder to be even wilder than Ragnarok.

Taika Waititi made a lasting impression on the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he directed the madcap, cosmic movie that is Thor: Ragnarok. What many arguably loved the most about the film was its quirky humor and zany tone. And unsurprisingly, the director is looking to amplify these elements in the sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder.

While speaking with Wired, Waititi stated that he’s hoping to kick things up a notch with Love and Thunder, as he’s aiming to make a film that’s “bigger and louder”:

"“It’s going to be bigger and louder and more bombastic. It’s only interesting to me if we’re doubling down on how nuts Ragnarok was.”"

Ragnarok made a splash when it hit theaters back in 2017. Before its release, many weren’t quite sure what a Taika Waititi-directed superhero film would look like. At the time, the New Zealand filmmaker was mostly known for his acclaimed, indie comedies like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Nevertheless, Marvel Studios’ decision to hire him paid off in a big way, as he was able to employ his own brand of storytelling on the God of Thunder’s third solo outing, all while extending the overarching narrative of the MCU.

Marvel and Waititi aren’t sharing too many specifics on Love and Thunder, but they have revealed that the plot will revolve around Valkyrie, the newly-crowned King of New Asgard, searching for her queen. The film will also see Thor’s former flame, Jane Foster, wield the hammer herself. In addition, fan-favorite characters are expected to return, including Waititi’s own Korg.

The public’s response to Ragnarok makes it easy to see why the director would want to maintain its tone for the franchise’s fourth installment. And if he can make good on his promise of a nuttier film, fans will be in for a wild ride. Thor: Love and Thunder will open in theaters on November 5, 2021.
