Marvel Studios is keeping it in the family when it comes to the director of Ant-Man 3.

In an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, it has been revealed that Peyton Reed will be returning to direct the third installment in the Ant-Man franchise. Reed previously directed both Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp and is set to be the only director to have a complete trilogy in the MCU other than James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

When he was first brought on as a late addition to the project due to the exit of Edgar Wright, there were probably very few people who expected Reed, or the franchise, to return for even a second film, let alone a third.

After the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, the franchise’s future was up in the air due to the good, but not great performance at the box office. On the other hand, it was critically well-received and showed that Reed was really settling in comfortably within the world of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne.

The end of Ant-Man and the Wasp left several plot threads open, especially revolving around Ghost and Bill Foster, so it’s exciting to see the possibility that those will be wrapped up. Presumably, the film will take place post-Avengers: Endgame and quite possibly pass the torch from Scott and Hope to Cassie.

With Reed officially being brought on to direct Ant-Man 3, it confirms the rumors that the film was in development. However, there’s no word on a release date for it and, as The Hollywood Reporter mentions, it is presumed to begin shooting in late 2020 or early 2021 with a 2022 release date in mind.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder are expected to shoot before Ant-Man 3, though. But No matter when it comes out, it’s exciting to get an announcement and confirmation of yet another trilogy in the MCU.
