Joker has hit a new landmark, as it crossed $900 million at the worldwide box office.
Nearly a month after its theatrical debut, Joker continues to reach new heights at the box office. Now, the Joaquin Phoenix-led film can cross off another achievement, which puts it a step closer to an even bigger benchmark.
THR and other entertainment outlets are reporting that Joker has officially earned $900 million worldwide at the box office. With this, the Todd Phillips drama has become the first R-rated film to achieve this feat. It also puts it one step closer to hitting the $1 billion mark before ending its run.
Joker came out of the gate strong with a $96 million opening weekend, which surpassed Sony’s Venom to have the biggest October opening of all time. It would also reclaim the number one spot in its fourth week with $18.9 million.

Since its release, the supervillain flick has also become the biggest R-rated film of all time, beating out Deadpool’s $783 million. In terms of DC Comics films, it’s now the fourth-largest grosser after Aquaman, The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight.
Phillips and Phoenix’s reimagining of the Clown Prince of Crime was viewed as a significant risk by Warner Bros., so much so that they brought in Village Roadshow and Bron Studios to co-finance the production. With this, the project was only granted a smaller budget of $60 million. But as a result of the film’s runaway success, Warner Bros. must now split the profits with both studios.
Given this reception, Warner is now exploring the possibility of a “DC Black” label for films not set in the DC Extended Universe. There have also been talks of a direct sequel, with Phoenix even expressing interest in reprising his role. At this point, it’s safe to say Joker will leave a lasting mark on DC films and the box office as a whole.
