Karen Gillan wants to see what Gamora and Nebula’s relationship looks like without Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Nebula and Gamora have gone on an interesting journey since they were first introduced in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Before the two began to bond as sisters, their relationship was filled with tension. This mostly stems from their upbringing under their adopted father, Thanos. But the Mad Titan is gone now, so what does that mean for his daughters? Well, Karen Gillan wants to find out.

During a panel at Comic Con Paris, Gillan admitted (via Comicbook.com) that she’s not sure what the future holds for the two sisters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, she is curious to see what their dynamic will be like now that their father figure is out of the picture:

"“I don’t know. I think I would love to see what their relationship is now that their father, the source of the abuse, is out of the picture. I think that would be really interesting to see if they can form a normal, sisterly, loving relationship.”"

Of course, the actress still wants to see more of the Nebula that fans have come to know and love. Gillan loves that she’s an intense character, who’s not afraid to cause havoc, but is simultaneously a scarred individual with an abuse-filled past:

"“She’s a sadist, the biggest sadist in the galaxy. So she loves to hurt people and inflict pain on other people, but underneath that, is a broken, hurt, bitter girl who suffered an abusive relationship with her father.”"

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Nebula has had one of the most transformative character arcs in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the course of several films, she went from an enemy of the Guardians of the Galaxy to an ally of the Avengers. She’ll always have that sadistic side of her personality, but there’s no doubt she’s become an unlikely hero.

Nebula and Gamora now have the opportunity to form a healthy relationship that won’t be hindered by their father’s ambitions. Although, things could still be a bit complicated since the Gamora of the present-day MCU is dead and the current Gamora is the one from 2014, meaning they’ll essentially have to start over again.

Writer and director James Gunn has his work cut out for him when it comes to repairing this relationship, but we can assume he has an idea of how he’ll proceed.
