Damaris Lewis has debuted as Blackfire on Titans, and the actress and model opens up about playing the fan-favorite character.

The ninth episode of Titans season 2, dubbed “Atonement”, featured the first official appearance of Blackfire, played by Sports Illustrated model and BlacKkKlansman actress, Damaris Lewis.

Ever since the first season, Kory Anders/Starfire/Koriand’r and her alien origins from the planet Tamaran were heavily foreshadowed. Once season two of Titans aired, Koriand’r, as portrayed by Anna Diop, had her origins retconned. She was next in line to become queen of Tamaran. So rather than just undertaking a mission to guard the Raven and prevent the coming apocalypse from Trigon in our world, Koriand’r escaped from her responsibilities as heir to the throne.

Comicbook.com interviewed Lewis about her role as Blackfire, which had been rumored to go to  Oluniké Adeliyi, before Lewis later revealed through her Instagram account that she landed the part. About the role she said:

"“I get to play someone who doesn’t fit in. And I say that because, especially looking at the world right now, I think a lot of people are waking up to the fact that they don’t necessarily fit in.”"

What the model/actress is referring to is true for the character she is portraying. Blackfire, known as Komand’r amongst her race and the firstborn and eldest daughter of the Tamaran royal family, lacked the genetic potential to harness ultraviolet energy like most residents of Tamaran. As a result, she later underwent experiments.

Blackfire has always been ridiculed by her peers from her home planet, which fueled her animosity towards Starfire. Damaris went on to add:

"“And I always say legends don’t fit in, good and bad, legends never fit in. Anybody whose name you know, you know because they don’t fit in. So playing someone who – even though it wasn’t the nicest decision, obviously – playing someone who recognized that she didn’t fit in and recognized that she wouldn’t be comfortable with the way things were, was really appealing to me…”“And an honor to be able to portray that with empathy and really getting down to the root of the kind of beauty of being different and just being honored to play someone who’s just so different.”"

The geek culture outlet reported that Blackfire will make further appearances and is set to play a major role during the final episodes of Titans latest season. With a lot of plot threads left to cover, such as the Cadmus and Mercy Graves story, the Deathstroke and the Wilson family arc and Dick Grayson’s evolution into Nightwing, it will be interesting to find out what fate lies ahead for Starfire when she eventually confronts her sister.

Blackfire was revealed to have slain her own parents and most of her family before taking over the throne with her own constituents. She took over the body of her sister’s royal guard and love interest, Faddei, forcing Starfire to kill him before taunting her with a hologram. What do you think of Lewis’ comments?
