13. Black Panther

Released: February 16, 2018

It’s hard to sum up just how revolutionary Black Panther was. The first ever superhero movie to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and the first MCU to film to actually win an Academy Award, it went on to pick up three wins for Best Original Song, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Yes, that’s how incredible a production this film was.

Set in the stunning land of Wakanda, the story centers on T’Challa who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, must become his father’s successor as both king and the Black Panther. However, when he’s challenged by his cousin, former U.S. black ops soldier Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, he is forced to fight his family to ultimately save his kingdom.

One of those rare breeds of film that gets everything right, Black Panther‘s strong writing was accompanied by stunning visuals (try not to well up with tears every time you feast your eyes on the beauty of Wakanda) and an incredible soundtrack. But the one thing that stood out among all that was the performances.

Chadwick Boseman’s turn as King T’Challa is nothing short of a triumph, while Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger earned himself a place among the greatest and best-developed cinematic villains of all-time.

Wakanda Forever, indeed.
