James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will use more practical effects

James Gunn confirms that The Suicide Squad will use more practical effects than any of his movies in his career.

James Gunn is not a shy man when it comes to interacting with fans on social media. In a Q&A Instagram story, he said that he was given free rein to do what he wanted with The Suicide Squad and called working on the movie the most fun he has had.

His fun may have been strengthened due to the fact that The Suicide Squad will apparently be using more practical effects and sets than any previous Gunn production.

Gunn confirmed the news in a comment on an Instagram post where he shared a behind the scenes look from Guardians of the Galaxy. The post showed actors moving around from mic to mic in an attempt to capture better sound quality.

Fans expressed their gratitude to Gunn’s dedication to old-school filmmaking and his continued use of practical effects. The director then joined in on the praise saying, “There are more practical sets and effects in #TheSuicideSquad than all my other films combined!!!!”

His comment is most likely hyperbolic and just his way of hyping up his next movie. However, if fans were to take this at face value, then it raises a lot of questions about The Suicide Squad.

Not much is known about the movie other than the cast. There is no indication from Gunn or Warner Bros. on what the movie’s story will be but, if Gunn has been given freedom to do what he wants, then fans can surmise that the movie will not have any big universe implications in the DCEU.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movies were heavy on CGI, but this is a given due to the nature of the movies. His past productions were indie projects, so lack of CGI was also a given due to a lack of budget.

The Suicide Squad is presumably a movie that will have a budget more comparable to Guardians of the Galaxy than Super, so the reliance on practical effects will bring a lot of intrigue to Gunn’s vision for The Suicide Squad. The news will bring more anticipation for a tease of the movie.
