11/20/2019 UPDATE: Deadline reports that a Joker sequel is not yet set in stone, and there are currently no deals in place for director Todd Phillips or his co-writer, Scott Silver. The trade also mentions that a portfolio of DC villain origin films was not pitched.

Joker laughed its way to the bank, opening up many possibilities for more DC villains movies including a sequel.

Todd Phillips pitched Warner Bros an idea about a DC universe separated from the DCEU; a universe that would tell origin stories of DC Comic villains. WB passed, but from the pitch Joker got the green light and the rest is billion dollar history. Joaquin Phoenix was cast to play Phillips’ live-action Joker in a film praised by critics and fans for its original take on a classic DC villain.

Phillips’ story and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance gained Oscar buzz while earning a billion dollars in the process. Of course, with great success comes whispers of a sequel, and according to THR, that sequel is going to happen, possibly even with Phillips at the helm.

"“Joker has crossed the $1 billion mark; a sequel is on the way. As the movie keeps raking in money overseas, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker.”"

The fact that we’re getting a Joker 2 might come as a shock to many. In fact, it probably comes as a shock to most, given that Phillips previously intended for the the film to be a one-and-done story. However, like we’ve seen so many times before, success usually means sequels – and with a property as big and successful as Joker, it isn’t really all that surprising.

However, with that in mind, Warner Bros may want to rethink the idea for Phillips’ previously rumored DC Black/Dark universe. In fact, THR also theorized that two candidates for future films could be Lex Luthor and Darkseid. Both Lex and Darkseid are ideal candidates because of their in-depth history in the pages of DC Comics.

Although the proposed idea was for alternate universe, Jessie Eisenberg’s Lex could work in his own solo movie according to Bam Smack Pow’s own Byron Lafayette. Like Joker, there’s something different, a bit deranged about Lex; especially in the case of Eisenberg’s Lex. Batman v. Superman  scratched the surface of his character. Lex grew up in an abusive home; climbing out of poverty to become the one of the richest men in the world.

Warner Bros should allow Phillips to jump into the deep end of this alternate label. Why stop at Lex or Darkseid? There are plenty of DC villains who could end up dominating the box office with their very own solo movie.
