The actor joins a cast that already includes Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Jayme Lawson. Reeves will direct from a script he wrote with Mattson Tomlin.
Turturro’s career spans several decades, with his true rise to prominence coming in the ’80s through appearances in films from Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese. He’s also frequently collaborated with the Coen Brothers and Adam Sandler. Although Turturro has done smaller, character pieces like Barton Fink and Quiz Show, he also has a foot in the realm of blockbuster cinema as Seymour Simmons in the Transformers franchise.
Carmine Falcone is a classic Batman villain that was introduced in the ’80s as a powerful crime boss in Gotham City known as “The Roman”. He most notably appeared in two popular Batman stories, Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween. The latter gave him and his family pivotal roles. Falcone has also made live-action appearances in the show Gotham and in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.
It’s long been rumored that The Batman will draw inspiration from The Long Halloween, and Falcone’s inclusion will likely add even more fuel to those rumors. Turturro has plenty of experience playing seedy characters, which makes him a strong choice for the role, and it will be interesting to see his take on the villain. The Batman opens on June 25, 2021.
