Who is Moonstone?

Moonstone is a personal favorite. She’s not like some of the newer villains who people can relate to – she’s a terrible person. As a psychiatrist, she manipulated her patients into doing almost anything she wanted – including making them commit suicide. Why would she do that? Because she thought it was funny? Because it entertained her? To get money out of it? Well, the answer is all of the above. Karen Sofen gained her powers through manipulation and hypnosis of the original Moonstone. Yeah, she’s that dastardly.

Whoever plays Moonstone will have to portray a level of evil we haven’t seen in the MCU before because besides being an interesting character, there is nothing redeeming about Karen Sofen. Sure, we have seen some heinous moments over the years. For example, Mysterio revealing to the world that Peter Parker is Spider-Man (Spider-Man: Far From Home) was pretty underhanded, and then there’s Thanos, who erased half of the universe (Avengers: Infinity War). But at least they had some kind of reasoning behind their actions. Karla Sofen just does things to keep herself amused.

Thus the actor must be able to pull off intelligence and power so great that it justifies the character’s arrogance. Luckily, there’s someone out there who can do this and make it look easy. And that person is American Horror Story’s Lily Rabe.
