Warner Bros. may be considering villain spin-off movies if The Batman is successful at the box office.

In a report from Variety, the box office success of The Batman could lead to spin-off movies for the movie’s villains, Riddler (Paul Dano), Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz). Many of the actors in The Batman and Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) have contract options to appear in sequels and standalone films.

This would mark a new trend for DC Films and Warner Bros. after Joker made records amount of money at the box office. It is also possible that these villain movies will receive an R rating.

Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad are expected to receive R ratings as well as, according to Variety, it is an audience that Warner is hoping to reach. Disney bought 20th Century Fox which backed movies like Deadpool and Logan, but it is not likely that Disney will follow that same strategy.

More from DCEU

While characters like Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman are not characters that need an R-rated movie, if there is a creator that feels like they need to tell a story with one of those characters with R-rated material, it is likely that Warner Bros. will greenlight that project based on recent success with R-rated superhero projects.

Variety also reports that while some scenes in The Batman will feature Arkham Asylum, the whole movie will not take place in the high-security prison.

The lack of success from the movies featuring Ben Affleck as Batman denied fans the opportunity to see the full scope of the DCEU’s Batman universe on the big screen. Batman, of course, is a big property that Warner Bros. wants to see succeed – making it no surprise that they are pinning the hopes of their future cinematic universe on Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson.

If The Batman succeeds, fans can not only hope for villain spin-offs but may even be able to look forward to a Batgirl solo movie and a Robin/Nightwing solo movie as well.
