While Star Wars’ future on the big screen is uncertain, Disney is apparently setting their sights on a larger future on Disney Plus with a Doctor Aphra TV show possibly in production.

The Mandalorian has been a hit on Disney Plus, and Lucasfilm is already starting production on more Disney Plus Star Wars shows with the second season of The Mandalorian, along with Obi-Wan Kenobi and a Cassian Andor series.

Jason Ward of MakingStarWars is reporting that Marvel and Lucasfilm are already in production on a secret project that will bring Doctor Aphra to the small screen.

Doctor Aphra is a character that was introduced in 2015 in the comic Star Wars: Darth Vader by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca. In 2016, the character received her own solo comic book series with Gillen working on the first 13 issues and Simon Spurrier taking over as the lead writer on the current issues.

Her comic is the first Marvel Star Wars series to focus on a character not introduced in the films. She is an antihero archeologist who is brought in to work with Darth Vadar before finding herself on the run from him. She has been a well-received character by many fans and has been described as a Han Solo and Indiana Jones hybrid-type character.

If she is given her own Disney Plus series, it would give Disney a chance to spotlight one of the few queer characters in the Star Wars universe.

Her comic book series is still ongoing, so it’s unclear if this series would be an adaptation of the comic book or a continuation of her story from the comics.

All of the Star Wars literature that’s been released since Disney bought Lucasfilm is canon. The story group at Lucasfilm has been wise to keep the movies separate from the literature and not make it mandatory reading.

A Doctor Aphra TV series could test that reluctance and start tying in the Disney Plus shows to specific comic books and novels and vice versa.

Nothing has been made official yet with The Rise of Skywalker coming this week, but the success of The Mandalorian may convince Disney to produce more Star Wars shows on their streaming service.
