Marvel’s Runaways season 3 review: Goodbye to an era
By Sara Salamat
The conclusion of Marvel’s Runaways feels like it came way too soon, but all good things must come to an end… right?
*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL OF SEASON 3*
For those who may not know, Marvel TV is now history, as the company has now folded into Marvel Studios, which is now producing MCU-related shows for Disney Plus. This is part of the reason we have to wave goodbye to our friends, the Runaways.
The series had its moments but lacked what many of its Marvel TV sister shows had: a quicker build and better writing. The cinematography was definitely something that stood out compared to its competitors in the young adult, drama market, which is even more impressive considering its budget. The storyline, however, was one that this writer couldn’t stick to. The final season of Runaways continued to drag just as the second season, and ironically, this is partially due to some of the baggage that was not completely settled in that previous season. The first episode of season 3 began to take its sweet time to build. Here are some of the most interesting parts:
Parents Being Hosted by Aliens… Tables Have Turned?
Since the start of the series, the parents have been seen as the villainous demons. But now? They, specifically Victor, Tina and Stacey, have somewhat become victims now that the aliens have taken over the parents as their host bodies.
Cloak and Dagger Team-Up
Yes, you read that right. Our favorite New Orleans teens Tandy and Tyrone crossed over for an entertaining episode. As a fan of both franchises, I thought this was incredible. Both of the shows have vibes that carry dark undertones and have the same dash of humor, making them click instantly. This heroic team-up is exactly what we needed and maybe made me miss “Tyrandy” even more.

That Cruel Cliffhanger
So all’s well that ends well right? Wrong! The series finale left all the teenagers with relatively happy endings; so one would think. After episode 10 showed the audience a future version of Chase who mastered time travel, he went back in time (episode 9 to be exact) to defeat Morgan le Fay, but this time he was able to prevent Gert’s untimely death at the hands of the sorceress. But let’s not celebrate just yet – this is Marvel remember. Right before the credits rolled, Alex found a note from his future self that gave instructions to “Infiltrate Wilder Innovators”, “Hide Macha”, and “Kill Nico”. It was pretty cruel and bold to leave fans with this kind of cliffhanger, although showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage have mentioned that they were unsure of the show’s future while they were shooting the season.
Final Thoughts
Fans might feel there is some sense of closure now that the show is over. It also leaves the characters in an interesting position. These teenagers are now at the point in their lives where they have to consider whether they want to re-enter society and create their own futures, given the horrific and traumatic events that have happened to them. Will it be easy? Well, that’s all up to the fans to theorize at this point. But ultimately, these kids lived up to the title, “Runaways”, from the get-go and have constantly watched each other’s backs through every high and low. It’s what made them lovable from the start, and it’s a shame we more than likely won’t see them again.
Season 3 of Marvel’s Runaways is now streaming in its entirety on Hulu.
