Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to have $400 million opening at global box office

12/22/2019 UPDATE: Forbes reports that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will land an opening weekend domestic total of $176 million and a worldwide total of $373 million.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is expected to soar to over $400 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
Despite the mixed reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the finale to the nine-film saga is well on its way to a $400 million dollar global box office opening weekend, The New York Times reports.
With Thursday’s preview night collecting roughly $90 million domestically, it puts the film on course for total of $190 million in domestic earnings during its opening weekend.
Despite those numbers seeming high, they’re not as high compared to previous Star Wars releases. Some might argue the film is just victim of being “part of reboots” and believe the reputation of reboots not performing well. But that’s not true. The Rise of Skywalker’s predecessors,The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, were box office hits. The Force Awakens received a whopping $247.9 million in domestic earnings in the first three days, and The Last Jedi earned $220 million in its opening weekend.

So why the sudden drop? It could be suggested that the reason for its low projection from box office analysts is due to its poor Rotten Tomatoes score of 57%. Word of mouth didn’t help the film either , with critics being very torn on the saga’s send-off.
The film is also having a poor performance in China, which isn’t surprising, as previous installments in the franchise have also underperformed. According to Deadline, the film performed poorly overseas. The global box office for Rise of Skywalker is only at $59.1 million, and mind that the film is released in practically every country except a few, with it trickling into other markets around next month.
But it’s not just Star Wars that is struggling, as Forbes reports that the only films that were box office hits in China within the last 18 months have been Marvel/DC superhero movies.
The Rise of Skywalker might find it difficult to reach the final totals of the other films — The Force Awakens ($2.06B) and The Last Jedi ($1.3B). But Disney can only hope.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now playing in theaters.
