4. Taika Waititi

Directed: Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Taika Waititi was known for his unorthodox comedic style when hired to direct the third Thor movie. However, he did prove that he was well versed in action-adventure with Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Ragnarok didn’t disappoint with the comedy; it’s probably the funniest MCU movie to date. But the best thing Waititi brought to the franchise was heart. Waititi took a beloved character, played by a charismatic actor, and placed him in environments and situations where he would thrive more than ever.

Branagh had Thor off to a good start in 2011, and Odinson was always entertaining alongside the other Avengers, but Thor: The Dark World never brought the God of Thunder anywhere near his full potential. Waititi sent Thor to the forefront of the superhero community with Ragnarok. He matches him up against truly incredible odds – Surtur, Hela, and Gladiator Hulk. Thor has the most amusing encounters with Valkyrie, Doctor Strange, and Bruce Banner. His sibling rivalry with Loki is revived in a refreshing way. And when Thor loses his father and his hammer, his hurt is tangible, and the threats prove to be more crucial than ever as he loses an eye and then his entire kingdom.

Waititi amped up the visuals with flashy colors and placed music in the movie better than any director in the MCU, using Zed Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and Mark Mothersbaugh’s techno-cosmic soundtrack to great effect. Waititi was a good director who turned into a phenomenal director with Ragnarok – what he accomplished was well beyond most fans’ wildest expectations of what a Thor movie can be. That is why he is the highest director on this list with only a single superhero movie in the decade.
