5. Captain Marvel
Released: March 8, 2019
The story of Captain Marvel‘s incredible achievements at the box office became one of Marvel’s most revolutionary successes. The long-overdue first female-led film to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it starred Brie Larson as the titular hero herself, Carol Danvers, who arrived on earth and attempted to figure out her own origins – a journey that led to her crossing paths with MCU stalwart Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
A thoroughly enjoyable film that benefited from its period setting – it was set in 1995 – it, in many ways, felt like a Phase 1 film. Sure, it was tied directly to Avengers: Endgame but it also told its own self-contained story – and a highly enjoyable one at that. And given that it came out in such a hectic period for the MCU, it was nice to remember what it was like to watch a good old superhero adventure without having your heart in your mouth all the time.
The story of its success was more remarkable than the film itself, but that doesn’t take away from how utterly compelling Captain Marvel really was. The film’s humor was one of its strongest attributes and the on-screen partnership between Larson and Jackson was one of the best that the MCU has produced. It was an admirably strong debut for the hero.
