Joker brought home some major awards during this year’s Golden Globes ceremony.

Joker was undoubtedly one of the most talked-about films of 2019. A DC comic book movie masquerading as a gritty and compelling Oscar-worthy character-driven piece, it achieved an enormous amount of success that still managed to catch a lot of people off-guard.

It was a divisive offering, with many unhappy about the disturbing themes and the way they were portrayed, but it still managed to become the highest grossing R-rated film of all time and, in the process, had people thinking that it would find itself receiving a ton of award nominations. Of course, it did and the first of the award ceremonies were the Golden Globes.

The 77th annual Golden Globes took place in Beverly Hills last night, and Joker did indeed enjoy a successful night, as the star of the show Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor In A Motion Picture (Drama) for his chilling turn as the Batman villain (and also received a three-minute standing ovation from the audience), while the incomparable Hildur Guðnadóttir took home the award for Best Original Score – making her the first woman to win in this category on her own.

Divisive as the film was, there was no denying how incredible Phoenix was in the titular role and Guðnadóttir’s hauntingly beautiful score was goosebump-inducing – so it’s safe to say that those awards were more than well-deserved.

The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama (which was ultimately won by 1917) while director Todd Phillips was nominated for Best Director (an award that was won by Sam Mendes for his work on 1917).

As awards season has only just begun, should we expect to see Phoenix, Guðnadóttir and Joker pick up more nominations and awards at the BAFTAs and the Oscars? It certainly looks that way. Send in the clowns!
