2. Shuri And T’Challa’s Familial Ties

Who doesn’t love the sibling banter between T’Challa and little sister, Shuri? When the two first see each after T’Challa arrives home, it’s immediately clear that the two have a playful relationship. We witness the princess tease her brother countless times, but it’s all in fun. The Black Panther film describes the pair as being full siblings, but did you notice the familial connection between them in the comics is different?

While they are still siblings, they’re half-siblings, as they have different mothers. As previously mentioned, T’Challa’s birth mother is N’Yami who died during childbirth, while his sister’s mother is Ramonda who served as a surrogate parent to the young prince. The film depicts them as full siblings, as does the animated series Avengers Assemble. But there is no reference to whether Hunter was adopted by the former king and queen. It is mentioned, however, that the thief, prince, and princess grew up together as siblings.

In regards to the relationship between T’Challa and Shuri, they’ve always had a close bond and it shows in their interaction. While the young king is more serious than his sister, he appreciates her input and support when things get tough.
