With the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding to new places on the small screen, the Disney Plus shows could outshine the films of Phase Four.

Avengers: Endgame solidified Marvel’s dominance over the past decade, becoming the biggest movie ever. Going into a new decade, it’s going to be challenging to maintain that relevance. Marvel Studios will officially dip their toes into television, expanding their stories and characters for small-screen storytelling.

When Disney Plus launched, The Mandalorian was one of its biggest selling points, being the first live-action Star Wars show. The show has been praised by fans for telling a refreshing new Star Wars story while expanding upon the lore. Marvel should aim to do the same by taking advantage of the extra time to develop its characters and stories.

Marvel’s upcoming shows will focus on more unique characters and worlds that could end up being more interesting than their films. In 20-plus films, the Marvel formula has become obvious to anyone that’s following. These shows have a chance to shake up their predictable formula by spending extended amounts of time with their characters. In two hours, there’s only so much that can be done, but a six-episode season can finally focus on underdeveloped characters and stories that the films simply don’t have time for.

The Falcon and Winter Soldier will focus on its two titular characters who are always in service of Captain America. Now, Steve Rogers has given the shield to Sam Wilson, so it’ll be very interesting to see where the story goes from there. There’s so much potential for these two characters who are always in supporting roles. A season’s worth of story will give finally give them their due, and one movie probably wouldn’t have done them justice.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

WandaVision finally gives Scarlet Witch her much-needed time to shine. From what Kevin Feige has teased about the show, it seems this will be Marvel’s most ambitious offering yet. Scarlet Witch is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful characters, and this show will not shy away from that. Her story in the films is intriguing, but she’s hardly ever been a major player. The character is able to mess with reality and, since Vision is involved (despite his onscreen death), it looks like this show will go to insane places.

Loki will focus on the villainous character messing with time and space. Tom Hiddleston reprises his role — but as the Loki from Endgame who escaped with the Space Stone.  An MCU show focusing on a villain sounds refreshing and could be a lot of fun.

What If…? will be Marvel Studios’ first foray into animation, and it will be an anthology series, with each episode telling a new alternate universe story. Hawkeye will finally see the archer get his due, passing the torch to Kate Bishop. Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight will focus on lesser-known characters with unique worlds.

It seems like the Marvel Studios train won’t stop anytime soon. Their venture into TV is a much-needed opportunity to tell longer, more interesting stories that don’t need to rush. All of the aforementioned shows sound more interesting than the planned films in their slate.

With the recent news of Scott Derrickson leaving the Doctor Strange sequel, it seems like there may always be some type of compromise to serve the universe when it comes to the films. While the shows will most definitely fall in line with the universe, they will at least have more than enough time to expand upon their characters, a luxury the films will never have.
