Why The New Mutants will be the best comic book movie of the year
By Mark Lynch
An unknown element
The New Mutants has something the other films coming out this year don’t have; low expectations. Wonder Woman 1984, on the other hand, is highly anticipated for many reasons – none more so than the fact its led by a very well-known character. This, however, could end up working against it because if this movie has any faults, people will pick unfairly it apart, simply because viewers want it to be perfect.

There’s no such thing as a perfect movie (except maybe V for Vendetta). Birds of Prey may still suffer the residual side effects of the negative feedback to Suicide Squad and the other early DCEU installments – which is terrible considering that Margot Robbie is a phenomenal Harley Quinn (a movie that this writer thinks will be better than many are prepared to give it credit for).
No one knows what to expect from New Mutants. Who are these characters? Should we care about them? The answer is yes. The protagonists have something for everyone. However, the villains are going to rock just as hard as the heroes. Possibly more.
Alice Braga will be playing Dr. Cecilia Reyes. In the comics, she’s a hero and a mutant. We don’t know who or what she is here. She definitely has something up her sleeve – no way Dr. Reyes is just there to help. Then there’s Reverend Craig – a mutant-hating man of the cloth who looks as mutants as a creation of Satan. Guaranteed people will really hate him. That’s a good thing, as it adds yet another edge to this movie.
