Oscar Isaac producing and starring in The Great Machine
By Eric Bartsch
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s Oscar Isaac will star in and produce an adaptation of that other Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughan.
Oscar Isaac starred in a well-received, high-minded sci-fi drama by Alex Garland (Annihilation) that borrowed the title Ex Machina — also the name of a comic book by Saga writer Brian K. Vaughan. If that wasn’t confusing enough, Isaac has his sights set on adapting Vaughan’s tome for the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story in an exclusive. Isaac will star as the comic’s main character, superhero-turned-politician Mitchell Hundred, and produce. The film will use a new title: The Great Machine
Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel are writing the script for Legendary Entertainment, the producers behind the Godzilla and Kong-centric MonsterVerse. Shrapnel and Waterhouse are the team that recently wrote Seberg, a drama based on the life of actress Jean Seberg, starring Kristen Stewart.

Written by Vaughan with art by Tony Harris (known for work on Iron Man and Starman), Ex Machina began as a series at Wildstorm — an extension of DC — in 2004. Mitchell Hundred was a hero who hung up the cape to run for mayor of New York City in a post-9/11 world. Due to his ability to talk to machines, Hundred was dubbed “The Great Machine,” the inspiration for the new title.
Brian K. Vaughan and Harris’ story sets heroes and powers aside to focus more on politics and governance. Vaughan will co-produce along with Isaac’s manager and fellow producer Jason Spire. Among films Spire and Isaac have worked on together is the spy thriller Operation Finale.
Oscar Isaac has been an actor for several years but is known best for playing Poe Dameron in the last three Star Wars films. He previously dabbled in comic book fare with X-Men: Apocalypse, playing the title villain, and a small role in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Isaac can next be seen in Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel that Legendary produces as well.
Great Machine has no release date yet.
