Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams’ production company, will be developing film and TV projects based on the Justice League Dark comics.

Last year, Bad Robot and WarnerMedia signed a five-year overall deal that will see the production company develop both film and TV projects for the entertainment company. According to Deadline, the latest projects will be based on the Justice League Dark corner of the DC Universe. Bad Robot’s Head of Motion Pictures, Hannah Minghella, and Head of Television, Ben Stephenson, have yet to even take meetings with writers, so there are no specifics yet on which characters we could see come from this.

The Justice League Dark team doesn’t feature the superheroes most people are aware of but those of a spookier nature. Some of the more popular occult heroes include John Constantine, Deadman, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and several others.

This isn’t the first time a Justice League Dark project has been teased by Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Guillermo del Toro had been attached to a live-action film since late 2012 and, by 2015, after various updates and setbacks, he would only direct if his schedule allowed for it. The last bit of news for Justice League Dark was at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, where the film’s title was officially announced.

While we have yet to see a live-action Justice League Dark team join the DCEU, we have seen glimpses of that side of the universe outside of comics throughout the years. Most recently, John Constantine has been part of the Arrowverse on The CW, specifically on Legends of Tomorrow. Prior to his appearing in the Arrowverse, the character had his own show on NBC. Constantine only lasted for one 13-episode season.

Swamp Thing also had a one-season run on the DC Universe streaming app in 2019. While the overall response to the series was positive, there has yet to be an official reason for its cancellation.

In 2017, a Justice League Dark animated film was released, featuring a voice cast that includes Jason O’Mara, Rosario Dawson, Matt Ryan, Jerry O’Connell and more.

At this time, there’s no word on whether these films or TV shows would be connected to either the DCEU or Arrowverse. Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, anything is possible with the Arrowverse. And after that cameo, maybe anything is possible with the DCEU, too.
