In one fell swoop, the live-action Masters of the Universe reboot, headlined by Noah Centineo has been removed from Sony Pictures’ film slate.

It’s a sad day for some of you Masters of the Universe fans, as it has been reported that the live-action reboot of the Masters of the Universe was knocked off the release schedule for Sony Pictures. The film, which was in the pre-production stages, was supposed to be released March 5, 2021.

Instead, as clarified by Aaron Crouch of The Hollywood Reporter in a tweetMasters of the Universe – led by Noah Centineo as He-Man – is being removed from Sony’s calendar with the film adaptation of Uncharted – with Tom Holland as the frontrunner – is taking its place. Before diving into speculation, let us review how we got here.

After languishing in development hell at several film studios for the better part of a decade, a live-action Masters of the Universe film only began to see traction after McG was one of the latest directors to part ways from the project. In 2017, David S. Goyer was brought in to write the screenplay with further reports citing there are negotiations for him to direct, although he eventually stepped down as director – remaining on as executive producer.

Later, Variety declared that Aaron and Adam Nee were to be the directors of the film. Screenwriters, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, were brought in to rewrite the latest draft from Goyer. Filming was set to begin in July 2019, with Centineo cast as the lead in March of that year. However, production was reportedly delayed over budgetary and script concerns – with Sony most recently toying with the idea of selling the distribution rights to Netflix.

Masters of the Universe will star Noah Centineo as He-Man. The Nee Bros. is directing from a screenplay by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing for Escape Artists in association with Columbia Pictures and Mattel Films. David S. Goyer and DeVon Franklin are executive producing. Sony Pictures are distributing. By the power of Grayskull, Masters of the Universe will hit our screens sometime in 2021.
