Scott Pilgrim vs. The World will be 10 years old this summer; is it time for a sequel? Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is set to play Huntress in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, thinks so and has an idea.

While doing press for her new film, Birds of Prey, Mary Elizabeth Winstead spoke with ComicBook.com about Scott Pilgrim and a potential sequel. She’d like to see where the characters are in realtime, the 10 years since the original film debuted in theaters.

According to Winstead, the idea of a sequel had been generally talked about during the filming of the original:

"“You know what, I think that would be so cool. I would be so curious to know what happened to these characters when they’re in their mid-30s as opposed to the sort of 20 slacker thing. So I think it would be really interesting. We always talked about a sequel when we were doing it, but we always imagined it would be like, still like a year later. Where are they? But I think it’s way more fascinating to know where they’d be 10 years later. I’m down for it.”"

It’s not only more fascinating to see those characters 10 years later, but more believable. While most of the actors could probably pull off being only a year or so older, it would be a huge suspension of disbelief. But, we’ve seen Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Stacey Pilgrim, Knives Chau, and seven of Ramona’s ex-lovers in their 20s already. In their 30s, they would (hopefully) be almost completely different people and that’s a story worth watching.

As an example, think of Clerks and Clerks 2 (written and directed by Kevin Smith): Clerks is about two convenience store clerks that start and end as your stereotypical slackers of the ’90s. Had Clerks 2 come out only a year or two later, would the story be as good as Clerks? Would they have had any growth? Instead, the sequel came out 12 years after the original and we saw the heroes of that story in their 30s. By the end of Clerks 2, Dante and Randal’s friendship is tested and, while still being slackers at heart, grow up. A sequel that many Clerks fans hold in high regard.

That’s the story we need from Scott Pilgrim 2. The only trouble? Nearly the entire cast of Scott Pilgrim has become megastars and gathering them all in the same room for filming would be an Avengers: Endgame level task. However, in Hollywood, it’s never say never—especially if Winstead’s fellow cast members start to share the same sentiment about a sequel.
