Spider-Man director Sam Raimi in talks to helm ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Sam Raimi is in negotiations to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has reportedly found its new director. According to Variety, Sam Raimi is in talks to take over the film following the departure of Scott Derrickson. Derrickson left the project earlier this year over “creative differences.” He will, however, remain on the project as an executive producer.
The trade also mentions that Raimi will need to “get up to speed” before the project starts production in May. After Derrickson and Marvel parted ways, the film’s development schedule remained on course. As of right now, Marvel Studios has made no comment.
A veteran filmmaker, Raimi made his first mark on the film world with 1981’s The Evil Dead, which was headlined by Bruce Campbell. The franchise eventually spawned two sequels a reboot and a TV series. Aside from his work in horror, he’s also directed dramas and fantasies such as For Love of the Game and Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Of course, he’s best known for his work on Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy, which is credited for helping to set the tone for modern superhero films. If Raimi does sign on for Doctor Strange, it would be his venture into the world of superheroes since 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
In the Multiverse of Madness was originally described by Derrickson as the first scary Marvel movie. Given Raimi’s ability to blend horror, comedy and spectacle, he would appear to be a firm choice for the project.
Not much is known about the actual plot, but the film will see the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular hero. He’ll also be joined by Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Elizabeth Olsen, who will reprise their roles from previous Marvel movies. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to open on May 5, 2021.
