Birds of Prey only managed to grab $19 million during President’s Day weekend.

Well, it appears viewers prefer furries over the Female Furies — or rather the Birds of Prey — as Sonic the Hedgehog beat the Margot Robbie headliner to the punch at the President’s Day weekend box office. Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) only managed to snag $19.8 million for Warner Bros over the holiday weekend.

Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences, Birds of Prey, also known as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey which stars Robbie — who also produced the Cathy Yan picture — which could see a divide akin to David Ayer’s Suicide SquadDeadline reports hat the zany, action-crime film dropped below projections stateside with $33.2 million during its opening weekend.

More from DCEU

During its second weekend, the film’s ticket sales, while middling in nature, saw a drop (which is natural in cases like these) to less than half its domestic gross at 47 percent, gaining $17.1 mil and dropping to No.2 with Sonic in first place. In comparison, the video game adaptation featuring the super-fast, blue hedgehog scored $57 million over the President’s Day weekend. As it stands, Birds of Prey, which is currently headed into  its third box office weekend, has garnered over $145 million worldwide against a medium production budget of $84.5 million.

Controversy and ideological politics aside, some audience members accused the latest DCEU installment of promoting misandry in its marketing. That is left up to interpretation – and others have argued that gender bias has played a role in the film’s performance.
