Rumor: Directors James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez join The Mandalorian
By Erik Swann
The Mandalorian season 2 has reportedly enlisted James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez for directing duties.
The Mandalorian became an instant hit for Disney Plus, with fans praising the characters, storytelling, action and set pieces. However, the show’s success should also be credited to the team of directors assembled by writer and creator Jon Favreau. It was easy to assume even more talent would be brought in for the second season and, if a new report is to be believed, two big names are boarding the series.
Black Series Rebels, a podcast devoted to all things Star Wars, reports that James Mangold and Robert Rodriguez will direct episodes of The Mandalorian season 2. Bryce Dallas Howard, who previously helmed a season 1 episode, is also said to return. While this is all far from confirmed, it comes shortly after the news that Mangold is in talks to direct Indiana Jones 5, another Lucasfilm production.

Both Mangold and Rodriguez have built up considerable bodies of work over the years. Mangold is best known for directing films like Girl, Interrupted, Logan and Ford v. Ferarri, the latter two garnering Oscar nominations and wins. He’s also dipped his foot into television as an executive producer on Vegas, Zoo and City on a Hill.
Rodriguez has had a varied career that includes cult hits such as El Mariachi, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Grindhouse, Machete and the kid-friendly Spy Kids films. And like Mangold, he’s also served as a television producer.
The first season of The Mandalorian had several big names in the director’s chair, including Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow, and Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi. Ultimately, each was able to bring a distinct vision to the Star Wars universe, and Lucasfilm would no doubt expect the same from Mangold and Rodriguez. The Mandalorian is expected to return for its second season in October.
