In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The New Mutants director, Josh Boone, sets the record straight on rumors of reshoots.

The New Mutants began shooting in 2017. Shortly after, the announcement of a Disney-Fox merger came out, putting the future of the movie into question, and many rumors were abound about the status of it.

The New Mutants was made under the Fox Marvel umbrella, and while there is no clear indication that this movie will fit into the MCU, it will still be released this year with some even thinking it could be the best comic-book movie of 2020.

To be clear, there has never been any official news regarding The New Mutants other than the movie’s rating and overall buzz of the movie from its stars. Director Josh Boone wanted to set the record straight in his interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"“Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots,” he tells EW over the phone in late February. “And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups. We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.”"

Despite rumors of reshoots being the reason why the movie was delayed, the merger of Disney-Fox was what led to a 2020 release. Again, the film was shot in 2017, and Boone makes it clear that the young cast getting older would have made reshoots very difficult (if not impossible) to work around.

One of the stars of the movie, Maisie Williams, revealed to EW that she only heard news about The New Mutants through headlines. However, she also talked about how the movie is exactly what everyone wanted it to be:

"“The movie is exactly the movie we set out to make. I was nervous when they were talking about reshooting or re-editing that it was gonna be very different, but honestly, it’s exactly what we set out to do.”"

The New Mutants is described as a movie about “five teen mutants held at a secret facility against their will who face terrifying apparitions” and “as Stephen King meets John Hughes.”
